This one has to be chalked up to synchronicity.
My recent foray into Pirate Lego has me frequently checking into Classic Pirate and Eurobricks websites for news and ideas (i.e. distractions). One post that I had been following was the Guild of the Brick Seas team building challenge that doesn't seem to likely be coming to fruition any time soon, though there are various others on build techniques I may steal for the blog. So my routine of late includes a daily skim while I enjoy my morning tea.
And then someone "necro'ed" an older post late this week and momentarily turned my world on its ear.
When I started the Tall Ships project, I had offered to run a "Lego Ship Brick of the Month Club" as a way to make this a group event. I also had an eye on doing some sort of tabletop game using the ships we created as an end goal. While well received, no one took me up on the idea (my friends seem to be poor, or just fond of magic beans or something) so I shelved it and went on solo.
Well, it seems I am not the first one with the idea of a ship battle game using Lego ships. A few years back, someone going by the name Evil Steve developed game rules, and he shared them on the Eurobrick forums. It was pretty well received and that should not be all that surprising.
Evil Steve's street name is Steve Jackson. Fighting Fantasy Books - Car Wars - O.G.R.E. - GURPS - Munchkin Steve Jackson. Considering how much fun I had playing a couple of these during High School, the fact he had turned his hand to my newest hobby was both surprising and welcome news.
Weird how life can go full circle like that. Now the only thing left for me to do is get a few people back on board... or wait for my son to grow up enough to give me a challenge. :)
